DALLAS, TX / ACCESSWIRE / December 24, 2015 / North American Cannabis Holdings, Inc. (USMJ) today endorsed the Christmas day release of the new movie ‘Concussion‘ from Sony Pictures in conjunction with North American Cannabis Holdings’ effort to raise awareness for the neurological benefits of cannabis.
‘Concussion’ is the true story of Dr. Bennet Omalu (Will Smith), a forensic pathologist that discovered Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a condition resulting from recurring head injuries. Dr. Omalu crusaded to raise public awareness about the dangers of football-related head trauma.
A recent study conducted by Boston University demonstrated the prevalence of CTE, finding the condition in 96% of 91 tested subjects, all of whom played football at some organized level.
In October this year, Forbes published an article highlighting various research studies on the neuro-protective potential of cannabis to alleviate CTE. The article makes mention of Harvard emeritus professor of psychiatry, Lester Grinspoon pointing to the neuro-protective qualities of two ingredients of marijuana, Cannabidiol and Delta-9 Tetrahydrocannabidol (THC) in open letter to the NFL urging the league to support research into the neuro-protective potential of marijuana to alleviate CTE. The article also features a study in Spain revealing that the THC receptors in the brain are involved in the healing process upon sustaining brain injury. Also in the article is mention of Research in Brazil showing that Cannabidiol has the ability to regenerate brain sells and treat the symptoms of CTE. Finally, the article discusses Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, Calif. finding that patients who tested positive for high levels of THC were less likely to die of their injuries.
