Victoria patients and their families will be the first in Australia to safely, securely and lawfully have access to medicinal cannabis.
The state government passed the Access to Medicinal Cannabis Bill 2015 in parliament, giving patients legal access to the drug in exceptional circumstances.
Children with severe epilepsy will be given first access to the drug, grown and cultivated by the government, from early 2017.
The drug will be rolled out gradually, available in a variety of forms including tinctures, oils, capsules and sprays.
The Victorian Government will initally start with a small-scale, strictly-monitored cannabis cultivation trial.
The passing of the bill in Victoria comes after legislation was passed by Federal Parliament in February, allowing the cultivation of cannabis in Australia for medical or scientific purposes.
